Rescue Diver

PADI Rescue Scuba Certification on Catalina IslandAre you ready for a different kind of scuba diving challenge?  Learn how to handle diving emergencies as a certified PADI Rescue Diver! Catalina Island’s Casino Point Dive Park is the perfect location to continue your journey.

As a PADI Rescue diver, your scuba certification will be recognized around the world and is an important step toward earning your Master Scuba Diver rating or even going Pro!

Often called the “hardest class you’ll ever love,” Rescue will provide you with the knowledge and skills to prevent and manage problems in the water. You’ll become a much more confident, prepared diver and a better buddy – one who is able to rise to a challenge and help others when needed.

Your class will cover a range of topics and techniques including:

  • stress management and out-of-air emergencies
  • procedures for aiding unconscious and panicked divers on the surface and at depth
  • administering rescue breaths in-water
  • following search patterns
  • use of specialized first aid equipment

You’ll practice problem solving skills until they become second nature.  Most divers say it’s their favorite class because it’s so rewarding. While the class is serious, we still allow for fun between all the focused learning.

These skills will become second nature in the event of an emergency, plus you’ll be able to quickly spot and handle small issues to prevent problems from happening in the first place.

Our belief in the art of possible and adaptive approach to teaching empowers you on a journey that is unique to you. The PADI Rescue Diver class focuses on the concept that there is no single “right” way to perform a rescue – instead there are many variables and resources that rescuers consider and draw upon, depending upon the scenario.

The course takes a flexible, conceptual approach.  As an example, a rescuer’s relative size and strength (as well as environmental factors) may dictate or influence what technique will be most effective. You’ll learn to capitalize on your strengths, recognize your limitations and consider these in emergency situations.

All of our classes are private, limited to just you or your small group.  This class is generally planned over a minimum 2-day period, but with us, learning happens at your own pace.  Rushing through is not the way to go.

Our approach is different than you’ll find elsewhere: we celebrate inclusivity and diversity and ensure that everyone is treated with respect, patience, empathy and kindness.

All PADI courses are performance-based, meaning that we modify skill techniques to meet performance requirements by leveraging what individual students can do.  You purchase a class, but you earn your certification. Call us if you feel you might need additional adaptive support. Learn more

PADI Rescue Scuba Certification on Catalina Island

What to Expect
  • Your instructor will call each diver before the class begins, so you’ll be able to get to know each other and get answers to any questions you might have.
  • You’ll be provided with instructions for your Emergency Action Plan homework which must be completed before your arrival on Catalina Island.
  • You’ll also confirm completion of your CPR/ First Aid training within the last 24 months or arrange enrollment in a DAN First Aid/ CPR class (depending on availability).
  • Your class will be conducted at the beautiful Casino Point Dive Park, which is a world-class marine preserve located in Avalon with a shore entry down a short flight of stairs. (Adaptive accommodations are available.)
  • Pacific water is considered cold water year-round (upper 50s-low 60s F in winter and upper 60s – low 70s in summer), so you will be wearing a 7mm wetsuit, boots and possibly a hood.
  • Over the course of your minimum 2-day class, you will complete a Self-Rescue, 10 Rescue Skill Exercises and 2 Rescue Scenarios.

DAY ONE

  1. The price of your course includes the required eLearning, which you’ll complete at home before your arrival on Catalina Island. We’ll review the information you learned to make sure you have a clear understanding of the information.
  2. Next, you’ll complete a checkout dive to allow your instructor to evaluate your abilities and level of comfort in the ocean.
  3. You will usually complete your Self-Rescue and Exercises 1-6 and 9 on Day One with surface intervals between each dive, including time for resting, water and a healthy lunch.
  4. If all skills are not completed for each Exercise, additional dives will be required. PADI standards allow for up to three training dives per day.
  5. Lastly, you’ll review your Emergency Action Plan homework and make any needed updates.

PLEASE NOTE: The Park is considered Confined Open Water by PADI standards.  None of your class will be conducted in a pool – there are no pools available on the island.

There’s always time for questions – we’re here to help you every step of the way!

 DAY TWO

  1. We’ll begin where we left off and complete Exercises 7, 8 and 10 as well as Scenarios 1 and 2. Some divers need additional time to complete the class, and multiple options are available to do so.
  2. If you’ve completed all performance requirements, TA-DA! You’re now a certified PADI Rescue Diver!
What’s Required
  • All divers must currently hold at least Adventure Diver certification with proof of completion of an Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive.
  • Due to the physical nature and skill requirements of this class, we generally require all divers be aged 15 or older with a minimum of 20 logged dives. Please give us a call if you have questions or concerns.
  • Class Size: For Rescue, we prefer to keep the class size to a maximum of 4 divers in one party so that everyone has enough time to learn in comfort at their own pace. However, if you have a larger family group, please call us and we will try to accommodate your needs.
  • We have had requests by certified friends or family members to join divers on certification classes. Due to the skill/ scenario nature of this course, this is generally not allowed. If this is something you feel strongly about, please call us to discuss your concerns.
  • First Aid/ CPR Certification: You must provide proof of CPR/ First Aid training from a recognized training agency (such as the Red Cross or American Heart Association) within the last 24 months.
    • Alternatively, you can enroll in DAN CPR/ First Aid.
    • You must complete the required eLearning at home before your arrival on Catalina Island. The in-person training will be completed on Catalina Island with your instructor.
  • Rescue Gear: You must provide your own pocket mask for use during the class. Give us a call and we’ll help you choose the correct option.
  • Insurance: You must purchase DAN Dive Insurance and provide proof of insurance prior to your arrival on Catalina Island. Learn more
  • Logbook: Please bring your current Logbook for your instructor to review.
  • Medical Clearance: All certification classes require medical clearance before arrival on the island. Please download and complete this form immediately, returning it signed via email as soon as possible before your arrival.
  • Depending on each diver’s unique circumstance, signoff by a medical doctor may be required. Please contact us immediately if you have any concerns whatsoever. If you need medical signoff and you do not have that before your arrival, you will not be allowed to proceed with your class.
  • If anyone under the age of 18 is participating, there are additional forms which will be provided, and which must also be completed and signed by a parent or guardian and returned via email as soon as possible before your arrival.
  • You must be able to swim and be in good overall health.
  • Do bring your own bathing suit and towel. We also recommend bringing a warm jacket for surface intervals.

  • eLearning: The price of your class includes the required eLearning, which must be completed prior to your arrival on Catalina Island. Once you’ve purchased your class, a link to your personal e-Learning will be provided.
  • Private Instruction: Your class will be yours alone. No one you don’t know will be participating.

  • If you already have your own gear, we’ll fit you and help you learn to use it properly if needed.
  • If you have your own computer, please download and carefully read the user manual before you arrive.
  • Rescue Gear: We provide all necessary rescue gear (other than a personal pocket mask) including oxygen and advanced first aid kits and a sample Accident Management slate.
